"I suffer from the congenital weakness of believing I can do anything": First Edition of John Terraine's The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten; inscribed by Lord Mountbatten
First edition of this documentary-based biography. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Lord Mountbatten, illustrated with 64 pages of black and white photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by Lord Mountbatten on the half-title page, "To Helen Jean and John Secondari with very best wishes from Mountbatten of Burma." John H. Secondari was a distinguished American television producer and author, renowned for co-producing the Emmy and Peabody‑winning series 'Saga of Western Man' alongside his second wife, Helen Jean. Helen Jean Rogers Secondari (1928–1998), a magna cum laude graduate of the Catholic University of America and one of Harvard's earliest female teaching fellows, collaborated extensively with Secondari, earning five Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards for their joint work in documentary filmmaking. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration from a portrait study by Karsh of Ottawa. A nice inscription, rare and desirable.
John Terraine’s The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten (1968) offers a compelling, retrospective biography rooted in the 12-part television series scripted by Terraine and presented by Mountbatten himself. Drawing upon Mountbatten’s own narration, documentary footage, and Terraine’s expert historical framing, the work uniquely blends autobiographical testimony with military and political analysis, tracing seven decades of Mountbatten’s career. Lord Louis Mountbatten (1900–1979) was a prominent British naval officer, statesman, and member of the royal family whose career spanned two world wars and the dissolution of the British Empire. As Supreme Allied Commander of Southeast Asia during World War II and later the last Viceroy of India, Mountbatten played a pivotal role in both military strategy and imperial transition, overseeing the controversial partition of India in 1947. His later service as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Defence Staff reflected his enduring influence within Britain’s military establishment, while his close ties to the royal family—particularly as mentor to Prince Charles—underscored his significance in both political and ceremonial life.
