Howes reports this was said to be edited by Thomas Paine under the direction of Edward Langworthy, one of the signers of the Articles of Confederation. In very good condition.
The Life and Memoirs of the Late Major General Lee occupies an important place in the historiography of the American Revolution. As one of the earliest biographical works on Charles Lee (1732–1782), the volume reflected contemporary debates over his controversial role in the Continental Army and his infamous clash with George Washington at the Battle of Monmouth. The memoir, compiled and published decades after Lee’s death, attempted both to vindicate and to contextualize his military service, presenting him as a misunderstood figure whose reputation had been overshadowed by accusations of cowardice and insubordination. Langworthy’s involvement as editor was particularly significant: as a former delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the Articles of Confederation, he brought both political authority and personal investment to the shaping of Lee’s legacy.
