First edition of Cornelius Ryan's The Last Battle; lengthily inscribed by him to legendary war correspondent Jack 'Beaver the Beard' Thompson
First edition of Ryan's suspenseful account of the events leading up to the Battle of Berlin in World War II. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, illustrated. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by the author with a full-page inscription to the fly-leaf, "To Beaver In memory of a day when he told me the opening of this book was wrong & caused me to yank 35,000 words. Hope you like the difference now. With gratitude as always, & admiration Cornelius Ryan." The Recipient, Jack Thompson, nicknamed Beaver the Beard, was an American war correspondent, who in 1942 became the first news reporter to parachute into Europe with Lt. Col. Edson Raff of the 82nd Airborne’s 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion on a jump near Oran, Algeria. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Author photograph by John Phillips.
Working with the worldwide research facilities of Reader's Digest, Ryan interviewed hundreds of participants in the great events of Berlin's fall to structure this sweeping and dramatic record of the events leading up to the Battle of Berlin. The masterfully integrated story made news upon publication for suggesting that the German capture of a top-secret Allied plan for dividing and occupying Germany (Operation Eclipse) helped stiffen German resistance and prolonged World War II. It remains one of the most dramatic and detailed accounts of World War II history.
