First edition of this classic collection of legends, myths, and poetry with illustrations by George Cruikshank, John Tenniel, and John Leech. Octavo, bound in full morocco by Kelliegram with an elaborately illustrated morocco inlay to the front panel depicting Tenniel’s illustration for “The Brothers of Birchington”, gilt titles and morocco inlays to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, all edges gilt, with 60 illustrations by Crikshank, Leech and Tenniel. In fine condition. An exceptional example.

The Ingoldsby Legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley. They remained popular during the 19th century, when they ran through many editions illustrated by artists including John Leech, George Cruikshank, John Tenniel, and Arthur Rackham.
