By rendering this foundational work of Western historiography into accessible Victorian English, Rawlinson introduced a broad readership to Herodotus’s account of the Greco-Persian Wars and his wide-ranging ethnographic descriptions. Accompanied by extensive notes and appendices, the translation reflected contemporary scholarly interests in ancient history, archaeology, and imperial narratives.
