First American edition. Octavo, three quarters leather over marbled boards. Raised bands, titles to the spine in gilt.
William Mitford was educated at Queen's College, Oxford, and served in the South Hampshire militia, where one of his fellow officers was Edward Gibbon. He began his masterwork on the history of ancient Greece after a visit to the Continent, during which he travelled to a number of countries but never, ironically, to Greece.
