Rare First Edition of Miss L.M. Cubley's The Hills and Plains of Palestine
First edition of this extraordinary piece of travel writing. Quarto, original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine in five compartments, elaborate gilt borders and 'Judea Capta' centerpiece of a woman mourning at the base of a palm tree to the front panel, matching borders stamped in blind with a gilt 'Judea Capta' centerpiece of the Roman Emperor Vespasian to the rear panel, all edges gilt, tissue-guarded frontispiece of a mosque enclosure, illustrated with several drawings and twenty-eight full page lithographic plates modeled after the author's original sketches. In very good condition with light rubbing to the extremities. First editions are rare.
During her trip to Palestine at the end of 1853, Lucy Matilda Cubley created numerous sketches of places, people, and objects of interest faithful to the experiences of those residential and visiting. In Cubley's opinion, her own descriptions could only fall short of the writings of other brilliant travel writers. In her 'Hills and Plains of Palestine,' descriptive letter-press comes second only to Cubley's exquisite visual depictions of the Holy Land.
