First edition of Patrick Buchanan’s fiery manifesto against free trade and economic globalization, a bestseller that helped define the economic nationalism of his insurgent presidential campaigns. Octavo, original black boards. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, “To Senator John Glenn, With Admiration and Best Wishes, Pat Buchanan August 31, 1998.” The recipient, John Herschel Glenn Jr., was an American Marine Corps aviator, test pilot, astronaut, and United States Senator whose career spanned seven decades and encompassed two of the most celebrated achievements in the history of American public life. Born in Cambridge, Ohio, Glenn flew 59 combat missions in World War II and 90 missions in Korea, where his wingman on several occasions was the baseball legend Ted Williams, before becoming a test pilot of exceptional distinction and setting a transcontinental speed record in 1957 by flying from Los Angeles to New York in three hours and 23 minutes. On February 20, 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth, completing three orbits aboard Friendship 7 as part of NASA's Project Mercury in a flight that lasted four hours and 55 minutes and made him the most celebrated American hero of the Space Age, receiving a ticker tape parade in New York City attended by an estimated four million people and addressing a joint session of Congress. President John F. Kennedy personally grounded Glenn after the flight, considering him too valuable a national asset to risk on another mission, a decision that effectively ended his astronaut career. He subsequently entered politics, serving as United States Senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999, mounting a campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984, and returning to space in October 1998 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery at the age of 77, becoming the oldest human being ever to fly in space and completing 134 Earth orbits over nine days in a mission that also gathered important data on the effects of spaceflight on the aging human body. Buchanan, a speechwriter and adviser to Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Reagan, a television commentator, and a three-time candidate for the White House, contended that agreements such as NAFTA and GATT had hollowed out America’s industrial heartland at the expense of its working families.
