First Edition of The Enterprising Americans: A Business History of the United States; Warmly Inscribed by John Chamberlain
First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a near very good dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Al Wedemeyer, with gratitude and affection, John Chamberlain June 1963." The recipient was General Albert Wedemeyer who was a United States Army commander who served in Asia during World War II from October 1943 to the end of the war. Previously, he was an important member of the War Planning Board which formulated plans for the Invasion of Normandy. He was General George Marshall's chief consultant when in the Spring of 1942 he traveled to London with General Marshall and a small group of American military men to consult with the British in an effort to convince the British to support the cross channel invasion.
John Chamberlain was an American journalist, business and economic historian, syndicated columnist and literary critic. He was dubbed "one of Americas most trusted book reviewers" by the classical liberal and slightly libertarian magazine The Freeman. "A fresh, sound, and stimulating treatment....Mr. Chamberlain deserves praise for his careful use of source materials, and for the judicious character of his interpretation. His book is interesting from beginning to end" (Allan Nevins).
