The Day of the Tortoise is a short comic novel by H.E. Bates, one of the most prolific and popular English writers of the twentieth century, a master of the short story and of gently observed English country life. Best known for his Larkin family novels beginning with The Darling Buds of May and for his wartime classic Fair Stood the Wind for France, Bates published dozens of novels and hundreds of stories over a long career. His work is celebrated for its lyrical feeling for the English landscape and its warm, humorous portraits of ordinary country people. The novel was issued by Michael Joseph under the imprint of Evensford Productions, the company Bates named for the fictional town that recurs throughout his fiction.
