Quarto, original brick-red cloth flexible boards. General William Tecumseh Sherman and his son P. T. Sherman’s booklates to the front pastedown. Inscribed by the Honorable Samuel F. Miller to General Sherman on the title page, "To General W. T. Sherman from His friend Samuel F. Miller." In very good condition with light rubbing to the extremities and front panel, front pastedown and free endpaper, and slight splitting to the interior hinges. General Sherman's library was inherited by P. T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Samuel Freeman Miller was an American lawyer and physician who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1862 until his death in 1890 and who authored landmark opinions in United States v. Kagama, which upheld the constitutionality of the Major Crimes Act of 1885, and The Slaughterhouse Cases, which ruled that the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment only protects the legal rights associated with federal, not state, citizenship.
