Second edition of Sir John Hawkins’s celebrated edition of the most beloved book ever written on the art of fishing. Octavo, handsomely bound in full contemporary calf elaborately tooled in gilt with a central panel and floral cornerpieces within decorative borders, gilt tooling in six compartments within raised bands to the spine, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, patterned endpapers, illustrated with over thirty copperplate engravings of river fish, angling implements, and views of the scenes described in the text, engraved by Mr. Ryland, and prefixed with Hawkins’s Lives of the Authors together with his historical, critical, and explanatory notes. In very good condition.
The Complete Angler, first published by Izaak Walton in 1653, is the most celebrated book on fishing ever written and one of the most frequently reprinted works in the English language. Cast as a leisurely dialogue among companions rambling through the English countryside, it is as much a pastoral meditation on friendship, contentment, and the natural world as it is a practical manual of angling. Walton’s friend Charles Cotton added a second part on fly fishing in 1676, and the two have been printed together ever since. The present edition was prepared by Sir John Hawkins (1719-1789), the magistrate, music historian, and friend and biographer of Samuel Johnson, whose annotated edition of 1760 was the first to furnish the text with lives of the authors, historical notes, and engravings, and which established the scholarly tradition of Walton editions that has continued to the present day.
