Seventeenth-century English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674) was associated with the Cavalier tradition and was known for his refined lyricism, classical influences, and engagement with both secular and religious themes. Educated at Cambridge and later serving as an Anglican priest, Herrick produced poetry that reflected a synthesis of classical models and the textures of rural English life. His principal collection, Hesperides (1648), contains many of his most celebrated works, including “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time,” which exemplifies the carpe diem tradition and reveals the influence of Horace. Alongside this volume, Noble Numbers presents devotional poetry that highlights his religious concerns. Herrick’s work is distinguished by its formal elegance, musical quality, and vivid imagery, securing his place within the canon of early modern English lyric poetry.
