The Body Machine (1981) is an accessible and heavily illustrated survey of human anatomy, physiology, and health for the general reader, produced under the consultant editorship of Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001), the South African surgeon who performed the world’s first successful human-to-human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town in 1967. One of the most celebrated physicians of his century, Barnard lent his name and expertise to a number of popular works on health in his later years.
