First edition of Hugh Hefner's first book, which planted the seed for Playboy magazine, the first issue of which was published two years later. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers, illustrated. Signed by the author on the half-title page, "Hugh M. Hefner." In near fine condition. Rare in this condition.
This small self-published volume of bawdy single-panel cartoons based in and around the various neighborhoods of Chicago planted the seed for what would become one of the world's best-known brands in America, Playboy. Founded in Chicago in 1953, by Hugh Hefner and his associates, and funded in part by a $1,000 loan from Hefner's mother, Playboy played an important role in the sexual revolution and became a showcase for cartoonists and novelists including Arthur C. Clarke, Ian Fleming, Jack Kerouac, Saul Bellow, and Shel Silverstein.
