Songs for Eve (1954) gathers the poems Archibald MacLeish wrote in the years after his monumental Collected Poems, its central sequence of songs giving voice to Eve, Adam, and the serpent in a lyrical reimagining of the fall from Paradise. Archibald MacLeish was one of the most honored American poets of the twentieth century, a modernist who bound himself closely to public life. He won the Pulitzer Prize three times, twice for poetry with Conquistador and his Collected Poems, and once for drama with his verse play J.B. He also served as Librarian of Congress and as an Assistant Secretary of State, and he remained a tireless advocate for the place of poetry in American public life.
