The first French edition of David K.E. Bruce's study of the first sixteen Presidents of the United States, from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln. Octavo, written in English, original printed wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For William Safire, with warm regards and best wishes from David K.E. Bruce." Accompanied by a delightful typed letter signed from Bruce to Safire, on the letterhead of the United States Permanent Representative on the North Atlantic Council in Brussels and dated July 8, 1975, in which the modest author writes, "Thank you for your letter of June 23, 1975, enclosing a copy of my book on Presidents. I am glad and flattered by your wish to have me autograph it, which I have done. I only wish to add that I am not proud of this work and cannot conscientiously recommend it!" The recipient, William Safire, was one of the most influential American journalists of his era, a Pulitzer Prize winning political columnist for The New York Times and author of its celebrated On Language column, who had earlier served as a speechwriter for President Richard Nixon. Bruce's history of the American presidency from George Washington through Abraham Lincoln, written in his younger years and reissued in this Paris edition while its author was serving as a leading American diplomat in Europe. Bruce was one of the most distinguished American diplomats of the twentieth century, an OSS officer during the Second World War and the only person ever to serve as United States Ambassador to France, West Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as head of the American Liaison Office in China and Ambassador to NATO.
