Sextet is a collection of imaginative stories, written in brief intervals of leisure, colored by Barker's love of France (his maternal country) and his knowledge of French eighteenth century art and rococoterie. These six 'contes' have the deceptive simplicity of Hans Andersen, combined with enchanting prose vignettes, echoes of Boucher and Watteau, and touches of pure comedy on the smallest and most elegant scale.
