First edition in English of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s classic work. Octavo, original publisher’s black cloth. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the title page, “For Edward with appreciation Laszlo Krasznahorkai NYC, 11 June 2012.” In fine condition. Translated from the Hungarian by George Szirtes.

László Krasznahorkai’s Satantango (1985) is a modernist masterpiece that portrays the disintegration of a remote Hungarian collective farm, where a group of desperate villagers, trapped in cycles of delusion and decay, await salvation from the enigmatic figure Irimiás. Through its labyrinthine sentences and recursive structure, the novel transforms a provincial setting into an allegory of spiritual and social paralysis in the late communist era, reflecting Krasznahorkai’s preoccupation with entropy, faith, and human futility. The English translation by George Szirtes, published in 2012, was awarded the Best Translated Book Award in 2013, bringing global recognition to the author’s demanding yet profoundly philosophical prose.
