First published in 1929, Faulkner's third novel portrays the decay of the Mississippi aristocracy following the social upheaval of the American Civil War. The work introduced Faulkner's fabled Sartoris clan and became the first of nine books wholly concerned with the saga of Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi.
