"A rare and tangible link to one of the greatest achievements in the history of modern bookmaking": First edition, deluxe signed limited issue of Sangorski and Sutcliffe's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Deluxe signed limited issue of Siegle’s Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, preserving Alberto Sangorski’s exquisite calligraphy and illuminations that underpinned the legendary jeweled Great Omar, the most celebrated lost treasure of modern bookbinding. Folio, original publisher's full vellum elaborately decorated in gilt, with large central gilt peacock to the front panel within a richly tooled botanical border, gilt-lettered morocco spine label and botanical gilt tooling to the spine, top edge gilt, pictorial endleaves, illustrated with 12 full page color plates by E. Geddes and additional in-text illuminated vignettes, initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. In very good condition.
Sangorski & Sutcliffe, the famed London binders founded in 1901, produced the legendary Great Omar, an extravagant jeweled binding of Edward FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam completed in 1911 after nearly two years of meticulous labor. Encrusted with over a thousand precious stones, heavy gold inlays, and Sangorski’s signature peacock designs, it was regarded as the most sumptuous binding ever created. Purchased by American collector Gabriel Weis, the volume was consigned to the Titanic in April 1912 and tragically lost at sea, leaving behind only a handful of photographs and Alberto Sangorski’s illuminated manuscript as witness to its brilliance. The present deluxe limited first edition, published by Siegle in London circa 1911, preserves that same illuminated text and exquisite calligraphy, standing as a rare and tangible link to one of the greatest achievements in the history of modern bookmaking.
