First edition of this scarce and detailed study of the remote and uninhabited Scottish islands of North Rona and Sula Sgeir. Octavo, original blue-green cloth, illustrated with maps and plates. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Alexander G. Ferguson Esq., with the Author's kind regards. 26.IV.34." In very good condition with sunning and soiling. It remains a standard work on these lonely islands and is scarce in commerce.
Ronay is Malcolm Stewart's pioneering account of North Rona and Sula Sgeir, two of the most remote and inaccessible islands in the British Isles, lying far out in the North Atlantic to the north of Lewis. Long uninhabited, North Rona is famous as a stronghold of the grey seal and for the ruins of its ancient hermitage, while Sula Sgeir is a great breeding rock of the gannet, still harvested each year in the old tradition of the men of Ness. To these Stewart appended a short account of the Flannan Islands, the Seven Hunters, whose lighthouse became a lasting mystery in 1900 when its three keepers vanished without trace.
