Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988) was one of the most brilliant and beloved physicists of the twentieth century, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 for his work in quantum electrodynamics, which he expressed in the celebrated Feynman diagrams. A key contributor to the Manhattan Project and later a legendary teacher at Caltech, he became famous far beyond physics for his irreverent humor, for the adventures in safe-cracking and bongo-drumming recounted in Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!, and for his dramatic demonstration, before a national television audience, of how a simple O-ring had doomed the space shuttle Challenger. His gift for making the deepest ideas of science vivid and joyful made him a genuine cultural icon.
