Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754–1838), commonly known as Prince Talleyrand, was one of the most influential diplomats and political figures in modern European history. Serving under multiple regimes—including the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Bourbon Restoration—Talleyrand became renowned for his political adaptability and mastery of diplomacy. As France’s foreign minister and later ambassador to Britain, he played a crucial role in shaping European affairs, most notably at the Congress of Vienna (1814–1815), where he helped restore France’s position among the major powers after the fall of Napoleon. Celebrated for his wit, strategic intelligence, and pragmatic approach to politics, Talleyrand remains a central figure in the study of nineteenth-century diplomacy and statecraft.
