First Editions of Retrospectives of an Active Life; Inscribed by John Bigelow
First edition. Quarto, 3 volumes, bound in three quarters leather, gilt titles to the spine, gilt topstain, marbled endpapers, frontispiece to each volume. Inscribed by the author, "Mrs. Caroline Dayton Her's to her better acquaintance with possibly her most venerable and certainly one of her most faithful and devoted friends John Bigelow." Also laid in is the author's card with his name and address, 21 Grammercy Park and note written in his hand.
Abraham Lincoln, was elected President in 1860, and appointed him American Consul in Paris in 1861, progressing to Chargé d'Affaires, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Napoleon III. In this capacity, working together with Charles Francis Adams, the American Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Bigelow helped to block the attempts to have France and the United Kingdom intervene in the American Civil War in favor of the Confederacy, and thereby played a material role in the Union victory. In 1865, he was appointed American Ambassador to France.
