Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann, one of the most enduring characters in American children’s literature, drawing according to family tradition on an old rag doll he found in his mother’s attic and gave to his young daughter Marcella. Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees, first published by the P.F. Volland Company in 1924, introduced one of his most memorable inventions, the wistful Camel with the Wrinkled Knees, and continued the adventures of the rag brother and sister who had captivated readers since Raggedy Ann Stories appeared in 1918. Gruelle’s tender, whimsically illustrated tales, animated by a spirit of kindness, have remained beloved for more than a century.
