Octavo, finely bound in full mottled calf, the spine gilt-tooled in six compartments within raised bands, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt scrolling to the panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of Lowell. Containing The Vision of Sir Launfal, A Fable for Critics, The Biglow Papers, Under the Willows, and other poems. In very good condition.
James Russell Lowell was one of the most celebrated American men of letters of the nineteenth century, a poet, critic, editor, and diplomat counted among the Fireside Poets alongside Longfellow, Whittier, Holmes, and Bryant. He was the first editor of the Atlantic Monthly, edited the North American Review, succeeded Longfellow as Smith Professor at Harvard, and served as United States Minister to Spain and then to Great Britain. This volume gathers his best-known verse, including the Grail romance The Vision of Sir Launfal, the witty verse survey A Fable for Critics, and the Biglow Papers, his satires in Yankee dialect against the Mexican War and slavery, which made him one of the most influential poetic voices of his age.
