Signed limited first edition. Quarto, three volumes, bound in original full red polished morocco with gilt titles and numbers to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece to volume one. One of 525 numbered copies, this is number 4. Signed by Kipling on the limitations page. In near fine condition with light sunning. Illustrated frontispiece signed in pencil by Francis Dodd. Printed on hand-made paper by the Chiswick Press.
“As a virtuoso in verse [Kipling] had more than one style at his command” (Baugh et al., 1505), from earnest cockney dialect to soaring prophetic proclamation. This handsome three-volume collection presents all of Kipling’s poetry—including such memorable works as “Mandalay,” “Gunga Din” and “If”—set in Baskerville type and printed on handmade paper at the Chiswick Press. With frontispiece portrait of Kipling in Volume I, signed in pencil by the artist, Francis Dodd. Livingston 545.
