In excellent condition with some light wear. Comes with a letter written by Grant dated a month after the conclusion of the Civil War. The Letter is addressed to Grant’s old childhood friend J. Russell Jones, who would later become President Grant’s Resident Minister in Belgium. The letter reads, “Dear Jones, As I now have a home where I expect my family to remain for a time, and to be with them occasionally, I want to collect what evidence I have of ownership of worldy goods. Will you be kind enough to send me, addressed to Mrs. Grant, my 5-20 bonds, certificates of Horne railroad stocks and the sword which I believe you have. When you come east you must make your stay always at my house. I hope to pay a visit to Chicago and the west soon but cannot set the time now. Yours truly U.S. Grant. Phila Pa May 4th 1865.”
"Grants memoirs comprise one of the most valuable writings by a military commander in history" (Eicher 492). "The best memoirs of any general's since Caesar" (Mark Twain). "A unique expression of the national character....[Grant] has conveyed the suspense which was felt by himself and his army and by all who believed in the Union cause. The reader finds himself...on edge to know how the Civil War is coming out" (Edmund Wilson).
