First edition. Octavo, original brown cloth. Bookplate of former United States Senator and Boston Brahmin Leverett Saltonstall, along with his signature. Portrait frontispiece along with 48 half-tone plates. A very good copy with some fading to the spine. Theodore Roosevelt had a longstanding relationship with the Saltonstall family. Roosevelt was a classmate of Richard Middlecott Saltonstall in the Harvard Class of 1880, father of United States Senator Leverett Saltanstall and was also related to the Saltonstalls by marriage. Richard’s mother, Rose Lee, was the aunt of Roosevelt’s first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee.
