First edition of this work by the Commander of the U.S. Eighth Army. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated endpapers, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For my friend "Bill" Bingham with admiration for a grand person. We hope the Binghams will soon join the Asheville colony. Robert Eichelberger March 1957." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Edwin Kunz. Uncommon signed and inscribed.
General Robert L. Eichelberger (18861961) commanded the Eighth U.S. Army during World War II, and led successful campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines, and the occupation of Japan. A graduate of West Point, he served in World War I before rising through the ranks. Eichelberger was instrumental in securing key victories, including the Battle of Buna-Gona in 19421943. After the war, he oversaw U.S. occupation forces in Japan before retiring in 1948.
