The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of World War II played a crucial yet often overlooked role in the war effort. Established in 1942, the WASP program recruited over 1,000 women who volunteered to serve as civilian pilots, relieving male pilots from non-combat duties and thus freeing them up for active duty. These skilled aviators flew military aircraft, including bombers and fighters, across the United States, freeing up their male counterparts for combat duty overseas. Despite facing discrimination and skepticism, the WASPs proved their capability, professionalism, and bravery, logging over 60 million miles in flight and contributing significantly to the war effort. In Marianne Verges' On Silver Wings, their story, a hitherto unrecorded document of American history rings with courage, romance, and adventure.
