First Edition of David McCord's Odds Without Ends; Inscribed by Him to Julia and Paul Child
First edition of a collection of light and occasional verse by David McCord, one of America’s most cherished poets of light verse. Octavo, original blue cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author to Julia and Paul Child on the front free endpaper in a verse that plays on the book’s title, “To Julia, Paul, This minor hoard: old odds and ends for my new friends, with homage from Dave McCord, Maple, Bread Loaf, Vermont, 23 August 1962.” David McCord was a fixture of literary Harvard and Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Julia and Paul Child had recently made their home, and he inscribed this copy the year after the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, as their friendship was beginning. Julia Child was a chef, author, and television personality, recognized for having brought French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association copy uniting the poet and the most famous cook in America.
David McCord (1897-1997) was one of the most beloved American poets of light verse and of poetry for children, and a legendary Harvard man who directed the Harvard College Fund for thirty-eight years and received the university’s first honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Odds Without Ends gathers his witty, urbane light verse, much of it first published in the Atlantic, The New Yorker, and Harper’s, on subjects ranging from the pleasures of the table to the follies of modern life. In 1977 he became the first recipient of the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children, a fitting honor for a poet whose playful craft delighted readers of every age.
