"There was every sort of paper there, only the devil was there too": First edition of Stevie Smith's Novel on Yellow Paper
First edition of Stevie Smith's first novel. Octavo, original cloth. From the library of Hugh Walpole with his bookplate to the pastedown. Hugh Walpole was an early 20th century British writer and literary critic, he contributed introductions to selections from Sir Walter Scott as well as Hugh Lofton's 1923 novel The Voyages of Dr. Doolittle. In good condition. A nice example with noted provenance.
Published in 1936, Stevie Smith's first book, Novel on Yellow Paper, is structured as the random typings of a bored secretary. At first a collection of reminiscences and gossip, the novel transforms into a an exploration of the nature of antisemitism in pre-World War II Germany and an equally powerful dissection of failed love.
