Rare “Nixon Resigns” Washington Post Newspaper; Including “The Nixon Years” Special Section
Rare 1974 issue of The Washington Post, the newspaper that broke the Watergate story, reporting the resignation of President Richard Nixon with the bold front-page headline “Nixon Resigns.” The August 9, 1974 issue, 97th Year, Number 247, one hundred twelve pages in four sections, originally priced at fifteen cents. The front page reports Nixon’s televised resignation address from the Oval Office, announces that Vice President Gerald Ford will take the oath as the thirty-eighth President at noon, notes that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger will remain in the Cabinet, and carries special prosecutor Leon Jaworski’s statement that no agreement was made over the resignation. Alongside the official White House photograph of Nixon embracing his daughter Julie after his decision to resign. The issue includes “The Nixon Years,” a twenty-four-page special section surveying the rise and fall of the Nixon presidency. In very good condition with toning to the newsprint and wear to the extremities.
On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the only President in American history to resign the office, brought down by the Watergate scandal. The Washington Post had stood at the center of the story from the beginning: its reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, aided by the confidential source known as Deep Throat, traced the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters to the highest levels of the Nixon White House, work for which the paper was awarded the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Facing near-certain impeachment after the release of the ‘smoking gun’ tape, Nixon announced his resignation in a televised address on the evening of August 8, and Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the thirty-eighth President the following day. This issue includes ‘The Nixon Years,’ a twenty-four-page special section reviewing the whole of his presidency.
