Rare New York Times Newspaper “Nixon Resigns”; Signed by Henry Kissinger
Rare 1974 issue of The New York Times reporting the resignation of President Richard Nixon, with the iconic front-page headline “Nixon Resigns. He Urges a Time of ‘Healing’; Ford Will Take Office Today.” The August 9, 1974 Late City Edition, Volume CXXIII, Number 42,566, originally priced at fifteen cents. Boldly signed by Henry Kissinger in black felt tip at the head of the front page. The front page carries portraits of Vice President Gerald Ford and President Nixon and reports Nixon’s televised resignation address of the night before, noting that Ford will be sworn in as the thirty-eighth President at noon and that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had agreed to remain in the new administration. Surrounding articles appraise the rise and fall of Nixon’s career and report special prosecutor Leon Jaworski’s assertion that no deal was made over the resignation. In very good condition with toning to the newsprint and light wear and chipping to the extremities.
On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the only President in American history to resign the office, brought down by the Watergate scandal that had consumed his administration for more than two years. Facing near-certain impeachment by the House and conviction in the Senate after the release of the ‘smoking gun’ tape, he announced his resignation in a televised address on the evening of August 8, and Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the thirty-eighth President the following day. Henry Kissinger, who served as Nixon’s national security advisor and Secretary of State and was the principal architect of the era’s foreign policy, including detente with the Soviet Union and the opening to China, agreed to remain in office under Ford, providing a measure of continuity through the transition. Ford’s appeal for a time of healing, and his pardon of Nixon a month later, would define the beginning of his presidency.
