First edition of New Directions in Prose & Poetry: 1941 in the rare original dust jacket
First edition of this annual volume of "advance-guard literature" edited by the founder of New Directions, James Laughlin. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Photographs by Wright Morris and Clarence Laughlin.
Founded in 1936, New Directions was born of poet Ezra Pound's advice to Harvard sophomore James Laughlin to "do something useful" after finishing his studies at Harvard. Early projects included anthologies of new writing featuring authors including Dylan Thomas, Thomas Merton, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti in addition to the early work of many writers such as Tennessee Williams and William Carlos Williams.
