Rare Neil Armstrong and Robert White Signed Photograph With a X-15 Aircraft
Rare photograph of a North American X-15 aircraft signed by Neil Armstrong and Robert White. Color matte photograph of Neil Armstrong, fellow-test pilot Robert White, and four others posing in front of a North American X-15 aircraft. Boldly signed along the lower margin below their figures "Neil Armstrong" and "Robert M. White," respectively. The group shows, from left to right: Forrest Peterson, Neil Armstrong, Robert Rushworth, John McKay, Robert White, and Joe Walker. In fine condition. The piece measures 10 inches by 8 inches.
Noted for his engineering excellence and technical capability as a pilot, Armstrong became one of only twelve individuals to fly in the experimental North American X-15, designed to explore the upper limits of supersonic flight. Eight X-15 pilots, including Robert White, actually flew into space in the aircraft, thereby qualifying them as astronauts according to the U.S. definition of the boundary of space. Ironically, Armstrong was not one of them, but still flew an impressive seven flights out of the program's near 200.
