First edition, Advance review copy of Vannevar Bush's Modern Arms and Free Men
First edition, advance review copy of Bush's classic treatise the threat of atomic energy. Octavo, original cloth. With the publisher's Advance Copy slip tipped in, dated Nov. 21 1949 and with a price of $3.50. From the library of William Safire, although not marked. William Safire was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixon’s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and supported him again in 1968. After Nixon’s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew. He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column “On Language” in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safire’s “magnum opus,” Safire’s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. In very good condition.
In Modern Arms and Free Men, the "world's greatest scientist in the field of armaments" answers questions about America and the future threats it faces from technological advances in atomic energy and manufactured disease in the hands of our enemies. "All in all, this is a remarkable book. Its abiding faith in democracy and progress is inspiring to those who contemplate the uneasy future. Its technical and military estimates are bold, clear, and provocative. Probably no one concerned with the nation's strength and welfare will agree uniformly with Bush's assertions as made in this book, but no one concerned can afford to ignore them" (Saturday Review of Literature).
