Philip Dormer Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, was a leading British statesman who was known to associate with literary figures, inlcuding Alexander Pope and Joseph Addison. The celebrated and controversial correspondences between Lord Chesterfield and his son Philip, dating from 1737, were popularly praised in their day as a complete manual of education, but they were despised by fellow writer Samuel Johnson, who claimed that the correspondences taugt "the morals of a whore and the manners of a dancing-master."
