Goan physician, orientalist, and numismatist José Gerson da Cunha achieved international renown as a distinguished expert in areas as diverse as obstetrics, archaeology, numismatics, and Sanskritology. In addition to his affiliation with various medical associations in Bombay, his prolific contributions to Indian history and linguistics earned him the fellowship of the Instituto Vasco da Gama in Goa in 1871, and of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bombay in 1873. One of his best-known works, Memoir on the History of The Tooth-Relic of Ceylon documents the history of the Sacred Relic of the tooth of Buddha, retrieved from the funeral pyre by his disciple Khema according to Sri Lankan legend.
