First Deluxe Edition of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park; In the Original Decorated Cloth
First deluxe edition of Jane Austen's most searching and serious novel. Octavo, original cloth with the upper cover and spine decorated in gilt with an elaborate floral design and a basket of flowers, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers, tissue guarded color frontispiece. Beautifully illustrated with twenty-four color illustrations by C. E. Brock. In very good condition. An exceptional example.
Mansfield Park is the third novel of Jane Austen and the most morally serious and structurally complex of her six completed works, tracing the fortunes of Fanny Price, a timid and impoverished young woman sent to live with her wealthy relatives at the great country estate of Mansfield Park, whose quiet virtue and moral steadfastness ultimately triumph over the self-indulgent and morally careless world that surrounds her. The most celebrated film adaptation is Patricia Rozema's Mansfield Park (1999), starring Frances O'Connor as Fanny Price and Jonny Lee Miller as Edmund Bertram, alongside Hugh Bonneville, Lindsay Duncan, and Harold Pinter.
