First edition of the pictorial history of the American space program, from the establishment of NASA to the Apollo XI mission. Oblong octavo, original boards, profusely illustrated with black and white and full color photographs. Presentation copy, inscribed by Apollo XII Mission Commander Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr. on the front free endpaper, "To The Crennas with best wishes from Apollo XII Charles Conrad" and signed by astronauts Allan L. Bean, Eugene Cernan, Walter Cunningham, Donn Eisele and Dave Scott. The recipient, American actor Richard Crenna, starred with Gene Hackman and Gregory Peck in the 1969 film Marooned directed by John Sturges and based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Martin Caidin which was based on the single-pilot Project Mercury. The film depicted an Apollo command and service module with three astronauts and a space station resembling Skylab and was released less than four months after the Apollo 11 Moon landing, attracting enormous public attention. It won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Robie Robinson. In fine condition. An attractive association.
