Octavo, original quarter blue cloth over terra cotta cloth, top edge red as issued, illustrated with maps by Rafael Palacios. Signed by Douglas MacArthur one the front free endpaper and additionally inscribed by the author, “To Dr. Thomas Clark with best wishes Courtney Whitney.” Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) was one of the most celebrated and controversial American generals of the twentieth century, a five-star General of the Army who commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific during the Second World War, oversaw the occupation and rebuilding of Japan, and led United Nations forces in the Korean War until his dismissal by President Truman in 1951. Famous for his vow “I shall return” upon evacuating the Philippines in 1942, and for the daring landing at Inchon, he was a Medal of Honor recipient, as his father Arthur MacArthur had been before him, the two forming one of only two father-and-son pairs ever to receive the nation’s highest decoration, the other being Theodore Roosevelt and his son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Courtney Whitney, the author of this biography, served for years as one of MacArthur’s closest and most devoted aides.
