Later printing of this classic work. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author with a drawing of a crocodile on the title page, “To Katie Enjoy! Bernard Waber.” Fine in a fine dust jacket. Uncommon signed.
Bernard Waber's classic children's picture book, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, follows Lyle, a friendly crocodile who lives happily with the Primm family in their house on East 88th Street. Trouble arrives in the form of their grouchy neighbor, Mr. Grumps, who considers Lyle a nuisance because the crocodile frightens his cat, Loretta. Determined to be rid of him, Mr. Grumps has Lyle sent away to the zoo. There, Lyle is freed by his old performing partner, Mr. Valenti, and the two return to 88th Street, only to find Mr. Grumps' house engulfed in flames. Lyle bravely rescues Mr. Grumps from the fire and is hailed as a hero, winning over his former enemy and earning his rightful place back home with the Primms. The book served as the basis for a 1987 animated musical film and the 2022 live-action musical film directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon.
