Autograph Letter and photograph Signed by American Associate Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis

Autograph letter signed and entirely in the hand of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. One page on United States Supreme Court letterhead and addressed to the son of a classmate of Brandeis, James Marsh Douglas, the letter reads in full, "Feb. 6. 1935 Dear James Douglas: With my best wishes. The photograph goes to you under another cover. It is nearly sixty years since your father and I met as classmates at Harvard Law School. I am glad that his son is following in his foot-steps. Cordially, Louis D. Brandeis." In fine condition with mail folds. Accompanied with the bust portrait mentioned in the letter of Brandeis in judicial robes taken by Clinedinst and signed on the mount below the photograph. In fine condition. The photo measures 7 inches by 9 inches, with the entire piece measuring 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Rare and desirable.

American lawyer and associate justice on the Supreme Court Louis Brandeis graduated from Harvard Law School at the age of 20 with what is widely rumored to be the highest grade average in the law school's history. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson nominated Brandeis to become a member of the Supreme Court. His nomination was bitterly contested because, in the worlds of Justice William O. Douglas, "he was seen as a militant crusader for social justice...and considered dangerous not only because of his brilliance, his arithmetic, his courage. He was dangerous because he was incorruptible ... [and] the fears of the Establishment were greater because Brandeis was the first Jew to be named to the Court." On June 1, 1916, he was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 47 to 22, and became one of the most influential and famed figures ever to serve on the high court. His opinions were, according to legal scholars, some of the "greatest defenses" of freedom of speech and the right to privacy ever written by a member of the Supreme Court.
