Early printing of Weller’s acclaimed play, published in the year of its premiere. Octavo, original boards. From the library of the play’s original director Alan Schneider with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Alan Schneider directed Loose Ends, premiering it at Arena Stage in Washington in February 1979 and bringing it to Broadway at the Circle in the Square that June, with Kevin Kline and Roxanne Hart in the leading roles. Schneider was among the foremost American directors of his generation and the great champion of the postwar stage in the United States: he directed the American premiere of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in 1956 and remained Beckett’s preferred American director, staged the United States premieres of Pinter’s plays from the 1962 off-Broadway double bill of The Dumb Waiter and The Collection through the Broadway premiere of The Birthday Party in 1967, and won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Direction for the original production of Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. A desirable copy from the library of the play’s original director.

Loose Ends, Michael Weller’s portrait of a couple navigating love, ambition and the unravelling idealism of the 1970s, premiered at Arena Stage in 1979 before transferring to Broadway, where Kevin Kline’s performance earned wide acclaim. Weller, among the keenest chroniclers of his generation, established his reputation with Moonchildren — also directed in America by Alan Schneider — and went on to write the screenplays for Milos Forman’s Hair and Ragtime, the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination.
