In this deceptively simple story, Baldwin has captured the experience of growing up as and African American boy in Harlem. Both lighthearted yet containing several dark and disturbing scenes of violence, Baldwin described the work as a “celebration of the self-esteem of black children." French artist Yoran Cazac, one of Baldwin's closest friends in France, illustrated the work.
