Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals is Robert M. Pirsig’s second book, the long-awaited follow-up to his 1974 cult classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Framed as a journey down the Hudson River aboard a sailboat, the novel develops Pirsig’s “Metaphysics of Quality,” extending his philosophical inquiry from the nature of Quality to the nature of morals through the story of the narrator and a troubled woman named Lila. Pirsig himself considered it his more important work, predicting that if people were still reading the two books a century on, Lila would be the one judged the more significant.
