First Edition of Liftoff; inscribed by Michael Collins
First edition of this comprehensive and engaging history of the U.S. space program, as seen through the eyes of an Apollo 11 astronaut. Octavo, original half-cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For...from one of his fans - Michael Collins August 1988." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The title page is laid in. Illustrated by James Dean. Jacket design by Richard Grant.
On the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, Michael Collins became one of 24 people to fly to the Moon, which he orbited thirty times. He was the fourth person (and third American) to perform a spacewalk, the first person to have performed more than one spacewalk, and, after Young, who flew the command module on Apollo 10, the second person to orbit the Moon alone. Liftoff offers a firsthand, reflective account of the development of the U.S. space program, from its origins through the post-Apollo era. Drawing on his experience as the Apollo 11 command module pilot, Collins combines technical accuracy with narrative clarity to trace key milestones in space exploration, including the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, culminating in the moon landing. Written in the wake of the Challenger disaster, the book also considers the risks, political pressures, and public expectations that have shaped NASA’s trajectory.
